Wow. Newcastle has needed a premier experience like this for a long time. Experienced service, talented but approachable food, world class cocktails (be sure to order your favourite classic) and showcasing the best views of Newcastle. A big winner for date night. Will be back very soon
I booked this restaurant for my first wedding anniversary, and they actually asked me to provide details as we booked the $160 degustation menu. I told them the occasion and that my wife doesn't enjoy certain meats. I should have known the service was going to be poor when we were put at a table far from the magnificent view, despite there being free tables right near the window for hours. Our waiter was unshaven, unkempt and had bad breath. We asked for cocktails which took 50 mins to arrive and were overpriced and poorly made. There were six courses, and while the first few arrived quickly, and after they swapped the raw fish for my wife to prawn (when we told the waiter that we left details about my wife's dietary preferences, they said 'I haven't checked my notes'). We waited 2 hours for the final four courses, during which time we were starving. When we asked for some bread, we were served but charged almost $10. The kitchen would not substitute the lamb main for my wife, despite the food's lateness. All that we were offered for all the issues were a cheap glass of the house wine. Despite spending $400, and admittedly the food was largely delicious, I cannot recommend this restaurant. Maybe because of the lack of fine dining options in Newcastle they feel they can give poor quality service, but if this was Sydney they would be dead in the water. If you have a big event, avoid at all costs.
Edit: Please do not be fooled by the generic response by the owner to my review: I posted this seven weeks after the event, not "several months." They obviously have the time sheets for the employees on for that night, so if they cared to follow things up that would be a good place to start!
One of the best fine dining in Newcastle. Yes the price may be high, but you are paying for quality, sustainably sourced delicious food, service and the view.
The experience is good as I was dine in alone I got arranged to sit in a corner. Thank you for the thought as I wouldn’t want to sit in the middle of the crowd.
I like the service from the waitress. She recommended wine based on the main I chose.
The only downside would be the place is bit noisy. As I sit next to a big group, they were laughing and cheering. I hope it can be a bit quiet for a good place like this.
Overall, it was a good experience! Thank you Roundhouse! 😊
Absolutely delicious meals! Everything we ate was wonderful. Had been hesitant about going in the past due to bad reviews but the reviews seemed to have improved and we had a great experience. The only criticism was that the fish meal was quite small (esp considering the price) so it was lucky we had sides to go with it. The staff were very attentive.
This is the second time we have been and we were really underwhelmed by the food, again. At nearly $200 per person (not including drinks) I expected to be blown away. Some dishes were okay and others were very bland (or in one case the opposite - it was like eating mouthfuls of whole grain mustard). The service was lovely but the drinks staff were super slow. In 2.5 hours we were only able to order three drinks.
Outstanding Service and atmosphere. Mark was our waiter he was very professional.
We ordered the 7 course menu option with wine pairing. Everything was perfection. In Newcastle nothing compares to the high standard of Romburgs and Roundhouse.
The best here is the view from the 9th floor to the port of Newcastle. Everything else is much overpriced. We were a party of 6 and joined the menu for AUS $ 109 per person. Entree, main, desert a nice variety of divers meals as we are used to. However what you get is not what you pay. You pay the posh style, the view, the Riedel wine glasses (a premium manufacturer of wine glasses in Germany), the cloth napkin, the AC (felt 15 degrees Celsius), the fashioned interior with a rather dark light and the posh food design. The portion is posh small, the sirloin steak was ok but rather lukewarm. Potatoes were great, so was the bread and olives for the Entrée. The winelist is nice and promising but the prizes per bottle massively overrated, see picture. I've managed to get a nice Shiraz Mourvèdre for 99$ cause for me 100$ is the max. The clou was the bill management...we wanted to share the total by 6, quite normal no? However we just could split the total in 2 and not 6. We were not informed of that in advance, neither by entrance, nor by the service. The service was good, friendly and helpful. But again, about 9pm the service started to clean tablrs and prepared the breakfast buffet for the next morning. The only plus I can give here is the service and the view, unfortunatelly. NOT TO RECOMMEND at all.
